Global Floods: The Impact of Climate Change Around the World Climate change has become an urgent global issue, and one of its manifestations is the increase in the frequency and intensity of floods. Flooding, as a natural phenomenon, can be caused by heavy rain, snowmelt, or sea level rise. However, climate change is exacerbating these conditions through various mechanisms. An increase in the earth’s average temperature results in an increase in the atmosphere’s ability to hold moisture. As a result, areas that experience high rainfall are now experiencing extreme rain, which leads to flooding. In countries such as Bangladesh and India, already common seasonal flooding has worsened, resulting in huge losses to agriculture and infrastructure. Coastal areas also face challenges, with rising sea levels threatening communities living along the coast. Data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) shows that the frequency of floods has increased two to three times in the last few decades. A concrete example is the floods that hit Germany in 2021, which left damage of more than 30 billion euros. Additionally, areas in the United States, particularly Texas and Louisiana, often face severe flooding after hurricanes, disrupting daily life and causing mass evacuations. As the impact of flooding increases, ecosystem systems are also threatened. Natural habitats, especially in low-lying areas, have experienced significant damage. Flora and fauna that depend on the balance of the ecosystem are affected, reducing biodiversity. For example, tropical regions such as the Amazon note that flooding can damage forests, resulting in the loss of species and disrupting the carbon stored within them. Governments and non-governmental organizations around the world have been forced to respond with adaptation policies. In European countries, there are efforts to build infrastructure that is more resilient to flooding, including better drainage systems and green open space arrangements. Meanwhile, developing countries struggle to implement solutions due to limited funding and technology. Fifteen countries exposed to extreme climate change impacts, such as Mozambique, Nepal and the Philippines, need international assistance to build flood resilience. Education about climate change and its impacts is essential. The public must be given an understanding of how to prevent and overcome floods. Training in disaster mitigation and how to deal with floods needs to be carried out so that people are ready to face this phenomenon. In addition, environmentally friendly technologies, such as dam construction and wetland restoration, can be an effective solution. The importance of international collaboration cannot be underestimated either. COP conferences and international agreements aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the most vulnerable countries. Collective efforts to combat climate change can help reduce the frequency and impact of flooding in the future. In conclusion, although the challenges faced are enormous, appropriate and sustainable responses from all parties can mitigate the impacts of climate change. Integrating policy, education and technology is key to building resilience to global flooding, ensuring a safer and more sustainable future.
